Personal Interests
I am a hospital-based internist at Denver Health Hospital, Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at University of Colorado, and Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for CUSOM Climate and Health Program, where I oversee curricular integration of planetary health concepts. I direct the CUSOM selective in climate change and environmental health which was the only such elective offered to medical students in the U.S. when first introduced in 2019. My primary professional interest is in clinical research and education surrounding the climate and health nexus, with particular focus on understanding the ideal role for local health systems in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
A leadership position (January 2017 - June 2020) representing the Society of General Internal Medicine on the Steering Committee for The Medical Consortium on Climate Change and Health galvanized an interest in climate change and planetary health, leading to completion of a Primary Care and Health Science Research Fellowship (2017-2019) through University of Colorado School of Medicine and subsequent Climate and Health Science Policy Fellowship (2020-2021) also through CUSOM. I am a founding member of SGIM’s environmental health interest group and contributed to SGIM’s Position Statement on Climate and Health (approved by Council 2021). From 2022-2024 I served as inaugural chair, then co-chair of sustainability for SGIM's Program Committee where I advocated for more environmentally sustainably practices and educational content at the national meeting. Locally, I co-chair the Environmental Sustainability at Denver Health and Hospital Authority, which signed the White House Health Sector Climate Pledge in 2023.
