Research Interests
My research interests are primarily focused on investigating the cause of systemic lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune disease that can affect every organ system in the body. My research program has three parts: 1) the study of genes that contribute to the development of lupus in order to understand how they do this as this may lead to new treatments, 2) the study of markers in the blood and urine that may indicate how a person with lupus is responding to treatment or predict when they are going to have a flare so that their treatment can be optimized, and 3) the study of first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, children) of people with lupus to identify factors that lead to the development of lupus so that we can prevent it.
