Care Philosophy
My current duties include service as Director of Research for the Marcus Institute for Brain Health, as the Cooper Neuropsychiatry Scholar in the Department of Psychiatry, and as Clinical Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (UC-SOM). Over the last 25 years, my academic endeavors have focused primarily on the cognitive and non-cognitive neuropsychiatric sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other acquired neurological conditions as well as the neuropsychiatry of neurodegenerative diseases and primary psychiatric disorders. My research has been supported since 1996 by more than 35 extramurally supported research projects, including 18 federally funded research grants, as well as 15 educational and programmatic grants and contracts. With this support, I have authored more than 125 peer-reviewed journal articles, 40 book chapters, and more than 50 other works communicating to scientific colleagues and the general public; edited seven medical textbooks, including the Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury, Third Edition (APA Publishing, 2019), Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, Sixth Edition (APA Publishing, 2018), and the subspecialty-defining Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry (Cambridge University Press, 2013); and delivered more than 275 lectures to national and international audiences, including a dozen named lectureships and keynote addresses. I serve as Editor of the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, as Associate Editor of Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, and on the Editorial Advisory Board for Brain Injury. I have received multiple institutional and national awards for educational and research excellence, including the 2015 Mitch Rosenthal Award for Scientific and Clinical Achievement in Brain Injury Rehabilitation (Virginia Commonwealth University and Brain Injury Services, Inc.), the 2016 Innovative Clinical Treatment Award (North American Brain Injury Society), and the 2018 Mitchell Rosenthal Award for Best Scientific Publication using the NIDILRR-Funded Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (TBIMS) National Database (NIDILRR TBIMS Research Committee). As Chairman and CEO of the International Brain Injury Association and President-Elect of the International Neuropsychiatric Association, I also contribute my time and effort to governmental and non-governmental organizations striving to improve the lives of persons and families affected by brain injuries and other neuropsychiatric disorders.
