Four years of funding to honor mid-career faculty with a track record of
substantial leadership in teaching medical students as well as educational
innovation. The goal is to help the recipients serve as agents of change within
the School of Medicine and ambassadors for the School of Medicine, underscoring our commitment to national leadership and innovation in medical education.

Whitehead Lecturer – Lecture delivered to the incoming class at the Medical School Convocation, University of North Carolina School of Medicine

‘The Whitehead Lecture was established in 1947 to recognize the high standards
and leadership of Dr. Whitehead, Dean of the UNC SOM from 1890 to 1905. The
lecturer is chosen by the Whitehead Council of elected medical students, based on
qualities of leadership, dedication, and devotion to medicine and teaching,
recognizing distinguished contribution to the science and art of medicine. Being
elected to deliver the Whitehead Lecture is among the highest honors for faculty
members at the School of Medicine.’
