Clinical Interests
I was trained in a generalist clinical psychology program which provided me the expertise to assess and treat both children and adults for a variety of psychological disorders. In children, I specialize in completing comprehensive psychological evaluations of learning disorders (e.g., mathematics, reading, writing), intellectual disability, giftedness, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. I am an expert in treating childhood anxiety and mood disorders (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, separation anxiety disorder, depression) and behavioral disorders (e.g., oppositional defiant disorder, parent-child relationship problems that are behaviorally based). My post-doctoral fellowship furthered my training in child behavior by adding the treatment of feeding disorders (e.g., food refusal, picky eaters) to my areas of expertise. Although I identify as a pediatric psychologist, the expertise I have as both a child and adult psychologist applies to type 1 diabetes in that many of the patients I see have behavioral difficulties strictly related to the disease (e.g., nonadherence to the type 1 diabetes treatment regimen). Some pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes also have comorbid psychological diagnoses (e.g., type 1 diabetes and obsessive compulsive disorder). Many adult patients (i.e., 18-25 years of age) with type 1 diabetes are seen by pediatric endocrinologists at the Barbara Davis Center and it is not uncommon for these patients to be referred to me for outpatient clinical care. In addition to specializing in completing comprehensive adult psychological evaluations for learning disorders (e.g., mathematics, reading, writing), intellectual disability, giftedness, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, I have specific expertise in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders in adults. Recently I have gained specialized knowledge of treating fear of hypoglycemia (i.e., a phobia of experiencing a severe low blood glucose level) in patients with type 1 diabetes. Finally, I also have extensive expertise in the assessment and treatment of suicidal ideation and intentions in both children and adults. Notably, I received this training as a graduate student under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Joiner, an internationally renowned expert, and I later augmented this training as his colleague when I was appointed the Associate Director of the Florida State University Psychology Clinic.
