Research Interests

My research interests focus on how fibroid tumors of the uterus impact prolapse and incontinence. I also have a passion for creating simulators that use instruments similar to chopsticks to teach minimally invasive procedures to residents and fellows. Every day we use surgical thread, called suture, in the operating room. I enjoy studying the best ways to tie suture to make the strongest and smallest knots imaginable.

Clinical Interests
My clinical passion is treating incontinence and prolapse. These are major quality of life concerns which are no longer tolerated by women today. Although the topic was stigmatized in the past, seeing improvements in my patients' quality of life after medical and surgical treatment of incontinence and prolapse motivated me to make this field my sub-specialty.

Care Philosophy
Seeing improvements in Dr. Muffly's patients’ quality of life motivated him to undertake this sub-specialty. He visits each patient for an hour and can make a diagnoses about 90 percent of the time just by asking simple questions and listening to responses. Dr. Muffly practices evidence based medicine. He’s passionate about teaching his residents, so when you come to see him, you will get two heads working together. In the operating room, he guides every decision and is present 100 percent of the time. He also takes pride in his clinical instruction, surgical expertise and bedside manner. He enjoys educating patients on treatment options to empower them to make the best health care decisions. “Our staff is especially compassionate and skilled in examining women and in helping their families understand that urogynecologic problems are not outgrown–they must be addressed and treated,” he says.

Personal Interests
On a personal note, I live in Englewood, CO with my wife, Cristina, and young sons. We enjoy visiting the elephant exhibit at the Denver Zoo and fishing at Kenosha Pass. My favorite place to enjoy a meal with my family is Chipotle Mexican Grill.
